Intermediate School

Welcome to Canterbury's Intermediate School where our aim is facilitating students' growth and achievement by creating a "SUCCESS" acronym for all in grades 4, 5 and 6 - Sculpting the Ultimate Child-Centered Educational Success Story.

Providing a rich growth experience for all children in this vital triad of school years is the focal point of all we try to do, and the challenge to excel is the "sine qua non" of every academic, artistic, athletic, and social endeavor. The priority of challenging our children to excel gives purpose to our planning and commitment on behalf of students.

We also pledge to collaborate with parents so our scholastic community is accessible to, and aligned with, each family. The objective is to promote a relationship in which home and school mirror similar goals. Our division, as a microcosm, must reflect the mission of the entire Canterbury community, and thus shape all activities in the school to guide the allocation of our resources accordingly.

Our yearly plans will always include exceeding the standards set by schools in parallel systems, in both our core curriculum and our spectrum of extracurricular offerings.

Our goals encompass not only the renovation of resources and the delivery of instruction in the math, science and technology triad, but also the continued implementation of the "Writing Across the Curriculum" initiative. That goal promises to provide a linking of critical thinking and written expression in every content area in the academic curriculum, and prepares our children to articulate complex ideas according to the standards of the most demanding colleges.

Implied as an integral part of every Intermediate School professional process is a continuous scrutiny that seeks to promote improvement. That continual review represents the potential for enhanced educational planning and delivery of instruction through a judicious application of administrative supervision, opportunities for professional development, and the pursuit of advanced degrees/graduate courses from accredited collegiate institutions.

Interwoven throughout these foci, is a professionally personal ambiance that we seek to foster in every encounter that takes place at the Intermediate School. That aura of creative teaching and optimum learning extends far beyond the instructional integrity that is the foundation atmosphere in every classroom. It includes the creation of a supportive relationship among students, teachers, administrators, and parents.

So, welcome to a child-centered learning environment where individual growth is the lynchpin to a collective excellence, pursued by our parents, students and their teachers in full partnership.
