Head of School

Rick Kirschner

Rick Kirschner Headshot from 2025

Now in his 10th year as Head of School, Rick Kirschner is Canterbury’s longest-serving leader and a guiding force in shaping the school’s culture of joy, excellence, and connection. Since 2015, he has led the community with a thoughtful blend of academic vision, relational leadership, and a steadfast commitment to student well-being.

A graduate of Landon School in Bethesda, Maryland, Kirschner’s early experiences in independent schools sparked his passion for meaningful relationships between students and educators. He went on to earn his B.A. in history from Princeton University, where he played Division I lacrosse, and his J.D. from Brigham Young University’s J. Reuben Clark Law School. Though he began his career in law, his path shifted quickly toward education, a field where he could combine intellectual curiosity, mentoring, and community building.

Before arriving at Canterbury, Kirschner served in teaching and administrative roles at several respected schools, including Oak Hall School in Gainesville, Florida, where he expanded Upper School enrollment and launched innovative academic initiatives. Across his 20+ years in education, he has championed strong honor codes, professional growth, and programs that inspire students to lead lives of purpose and integrity.

At Canterbury, Kirschner’s leadership is rooted in his belief that education should be
rigorous, joyful, and deeply relational.

He sees his role as helping interpret the aspirations of the community
and bringing people together around shared goals.

Under his guidance, the school has grown in strength and spirit,
supporting students to be known, challenged and celebrated.

Kirschner and his wife, Wendy, have three sons, two of whom are Canterbury graduates.
Their son Alek now serves as Canterbury’s Middle School Dean of Students,
continuing the family’s deep connection to the school.
