Our History
Founded in 1964 in downtown Fort Myers, Canterbury School began as a small, coeducational elementary school grounded in the values of academic excellence and character development.
In the decades since, it has grown into a thriving, independent, college preparatory school serving students from Pre-K3 through Grade 12.
From our early days in “The Bungalows” to the construction of our purpose-built campus on College Parkway, Canterbury has remained dedicated to fostering intellectual curiosity, meaningful connections, and a sense of community. Our evolution has included campus expansion, innovative programs, and a vibrant blend of academics, arts, athletics, and service.
In 2024, we proudly celebrated 60 years of excellence. We invite you to watch this video highlighting the journey, people, and purpose that shaped Canterbury School over the past six decades.
The David Lucas Award for Outstanding Service to Canterbury is presented annually at Founders’ Day to a member of the community (e.g. alumnus, alumna, faculty, staff, parent, grandparent, or friend) who has been selflessly devoted to the development of Canterbury School. The award is named in honor of David Lucas, longtime parent, grandparent, and member of the Board of Trustees, for his tireless dedication and commitment as a servant leader.
