Artificial Intelligence in Education
Our Community Values
Guided by our mission and Honor Code as well as our commitment to promoting love, goodwill, and trust within and across the community, these values describe how Canterbury students, faculty, and staff engage the use of AI. We measure new tools, uses, and expectations against these shared values so that we can support students and their learning while keeping our community’s trust and purpose intact.
| CORE VALUE: | BELIEF STATEMENTS: |
|---|---|
| Transparency |
We believe that trust and honesty are essential to a healthy learning community. We commit to making our AI use visible and understandable across the community. |
| Learning Process |
We believe learning involves purposeful challenge. Members of our community use AI to deepen thinking, not to dodge it, and never to remove the productive struggle that helps learning take root. When goals and expectations are clear, AI can extend curiosity, support practice, deepen thinking, and enrich feedback while keeping the real work of learning in our hands. We commit to using AI in ways that strengthen, rather than undermine, meaningful effort and the learning process. |
| Developmental Appropriateness |
We believe that students are developing essential capacities in critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving. |
| Privacy, Security, and Stewardship |
We believe that caring for our community requires vigilance. We commit to using AI in ways that uphold confidentiality, safeguard personal data, and honor the trust placed in us by students, families, and colleagues. |
| Connection |
We believe that personal connections are the foundation of a caring and supportive community. We commit to using AI in the service of our community of care and never as a substitute for genuine human oversight, presence, and relationship. |
