Canterbury School and SAGE Dining Services are pleased to announce that Canterbury will be participating in a new Community-Inclusive Dining program beginning with the 2019-2020 school year.
This new program, in addition to Hanno Dining Hall renovations taking place this summer, will not only provide more nutritious food and better food options, but it will also enhance the educational experience of our Canterbury students by strengthening the bonds between our students and faculty through the creation of a communal dining experience.

  • How was this decision made?

    The school made this decision after a two-year process that involved the establishment of a Nutrition Committee made up of interested parents and faculty, a review of other dining practices and food services of similar independent schools, a review and bidding process by various school food providers, and the implementation of a one-year trial period of SAGE Dining Services as an a la carte service. It should be noted that the role of the Nutrition Committee was a key part of initiating this new program, as the committee’s consensus was that the previous food service was not providing nutritious food for our students despite attempts to improve their service.
  • What are the benefits of making this change?

    Brain research confirms what we have always instinctively known, that our brains function best when eating high-quality, healthy foods. In addition to the neurological benefits, there is the added benefit of providing our students and faculty time to engage in the “unwritten curriculum” or those moments outside the classroom when our students and teachers bond and connect so that they can better work together in the classroom. By providing healthy, nutritious food at a reasonable cost in an environment conducive to fostering the positive student-teacher relationships, we continue to look for ways to provide the best possible learning experience for our students.

    1. All-inclusive price includes unlimited servings for lunch AND snacks

  • How does community-inclusive dining work?

    With community-inclusive dining, parents pay a flat fee in addition to tuition, which allows all of our students to participate in the SAGE program. Community-inclusive dining simplifies the entire dining process. Students do not have to remember to bring cash, and parents do not have to fund an account. Students are given an appropriate portion and are welcome to return for unlimited seconds. Snacks will also be provided for all students during their appropriate snack time.

    * The fee will be billed to your FACTS account on July 1 and January 1. This is a mandatory fee and families cannot opt-out of the community-inclusive dining program.
  • What are the benefits of community-inclusive dining?

    • More allergy-friendly, gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan menu options will be available.
    • Students will have the opportunity to step outside of their comfort zone and try new, healthy foods.
    • Students will have more time to eat lunch, socialize with friends, and attend club meetings without waiting in long payment lines.
    • For the majority of families, all-inclusive dining is more cost effective. The annual fee is lower than what most families spend in an a la carte model.
  • What if my child has a food allergy or sensitivity?

    SAGE places the highest priority on the safety of our community members. In community-inclusive dining programs, food-allergic children won’t be asked or expected to have a separate plate or meal, and they won’t be singled out to sit separately from their classmates. They’re a part of a dining service that fosters community.
    Using your community’s list of allergens, SAGE’s team of Registered Dietitians reviews your menus to ensure there’s enough variety every day. Those with food allergies and other dietary restrictions will always be able to find safe and appropriate meals.
    SAGE's strict food allergy management program prevents cross-contact and the possibility of an allergic reaction. Their procedures include:
    • Staffing an expert team of five Registered Dietitians who tag every dish for the 12 main allergens recognized in the U.S. and Canada and review every menu for variety;
    • Enforcing Serve It Safely food allergen protocols for food storage, preparation, service, and cleanup to prevent cross-contact;
    • Conducting daily pre-shift meetings to highlight any allergen-containing dishes;
    • Training all Team Members to recognize anaphylaxis and how to use an EpiPen®, where allowed;
    • Labeling all menu items in the dining hall
    SAGE's comprehensive allergen filter and ingredient lists, available both on your online menu and in the Touch of SAGE™ Mobile App, help you and your child choose safe options. On the app, students with food allergies can create custom allergy profiles.
  • Is the Hanno Dining Hall kitchen nut free?

    Yes. Because there is a great risk of cross-contamination when cooking with nuts, SAGE currently operates and will continue to operate, a nut-free kitchen.
  • My child is a picky eater. How can I ensure there will be enough options for him/her?

    Our SAGE Manager and Chef will customize the menu according to our community’s preferences based on feedback and ratings from surveys, comment cards, and the Touch of SAGE™ Mobile App. While the SAGE program provides a wide variety of food options, there will always be something familiar and popular. A team of Registered Dietitians reviews every menu to ensure there’s enough variety as well. Students also have the option to sample foods and return for seconds at any time.

  • What physical changes are coming to the Hanno Dining Hall?

    Canterbury is currently working with BSSW, a local architect, to address the necessary changes to improve and implement our new all-inclusive community dining experience for our students and faculty. Changes will take place both in the kitchen and in the dining area. As to the kitchen, numerous improvements will be made to the equipment and increased cold and hot storage facilities. As to the dining room itself, there will be a complete renovation of the current serving line along with the installation of three serving stations. To reduce our impact on the environment, we will also be implementing the use of reusable plates and utensils in the dining area. The goal is to provide a dining experience that enables students to partake in a healthy meal each day with a variety of choices in an efficient manner. These plans are in the process of being finalized and subject to modification, with the work to be completed over the summer.
