This course, for students who have completed fourth-grade language arts, is designed to sharpen and expand reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, and research skills. Areas of focus will include literature analysis and text annotation. Mentor texts will inspire students to craft well-structured paragraphs with topic sentences and supporting details. Students will explore their unique voice and style through creative and narrative writing. Word games that explore analogies, idioms, and storytelling will stimulate expressive language and analytical thinking. Distinguishing between fiction and nonfiction genres will support students as they complete their required summer reading assignment. Organizational strategies, study skills, and time management concepts will be reinforced to prepare students for optimal success in middle school.
