This course, for students who will be entering seventh grade this fall, is designed as preparation for the rigor of upper middle school English courses. Topics to be covered will include: a novel study with a focus on critical thinking and written response skills; an intense review of grammar skills; writing expository, narrative, and persuasive essays; and understanding the correct use of MLA formatting while exploring research papers. Students will also be taught the principles of the Collins Writing Program. Practicing time management skills, study skills, and organizational strategies will also be a core part of the class. This small class setting is intended to meet the needs of the students in a cooperative summer learning environment. This course is also appropriate for rising eighth-grade students new to Canterbury School.
