Canterbury Claims FHSAA All-Sports Award

Congratulations to our boys’ athletic teams on winning the Floyd E. Lay Sunshine Cup All-Sports Award, the top athletic team award presented by the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA), for the 2020-2021 academic school year.
The Cougars captured its first 3A boys overall title with a total of 48 points, beating out 62 other boys athletic programs across the state. Seffner Christian Academy, First Academy, St. Johns Country Day, and Maclay rounded out the Top 5.

“I am so proud of our student-athletes and coaches for what they accomplished this past year,” said Athletic Director Frank Turco. “This is such a high honor not only for our boys’ programs but for Canterbury as a whole. I am looking forward to continuing the success this upcoming athletic year.”

Points are awarded to a school based on its finish in FHSAA State Series competition in each sport in the classification in which it has been assigned to compete. The top 16 places are scored. In all sports with team scores, points are awarded as follows: 20 for the state champion, 12 for the state runner-up, 9 for the state semifinalists, 6 for 5-8th places, and 3 for 9-16th places.

Canterbury’s boys’ athletic programs had strong showings throughout the 2020-2021 athletic year. Track and field recorded strong performances at states, boys basketball and baseball made regional appearances, lacrosse finished top four in the state, and the boys’ soccer team capped it off with a 4-0 state championship win over St. Johns Country Day School.

The Canterbury girls’ athletic programs also had a strong showing in the polls, finishing Top 15 in a field of 64 FHSAA 3A girls high school athletic programs for the 2020-2021 athletic year.
