Freshman Biology Students Explore Mosquito Control Through Hands-On Lab

Our freshman Biology students recently took their learning beyond the classroom with a hands-on lab focused on mosquito control. As Southwest Florida residents, we know mosquitoes are part of our local environment, and students had the opportunity to explore why our region’s warm, wet climate creates ideal conditions for mosquito breeding.

During the lab, students investigated different approaches to mosquito control and discovered how biological agents can be used as an alternative to chemical pesticides. They observed the results of their work, analyzed their findings and connected what they learned in the lab to real-world pest management.

The lesson also introduced students to the work of the Lee County Mosquito Control District, which has partnered with the School District of Lee County for more than 30 years to provide hands-on mosquito education to local students. Each year, the program reaches more than 20,000 students with lessons that connect science to our local environment.

For our Biology students, this experience was a great reminder that science isn’t just something we learn in a textbook - it’s happening all around us.
