Canterbury Students Showcase Creativity in Odyssey of the Mind Tournament

Congratulations to our five Odyssey of the Mind teams for their performance in the 2019 Sun Region Tournament on Saturday, March 2, at South Fort Myers High School.
Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Odyssey of the Mind has five problems each year. A team chooses the problem they'd like to solve then prepares a solution. The second part of their overall score comes from a spontaneous question and answer problem.

Our fourth-grade team took on the problem called Leonardo’s Workshop. Sam C. '27, Braden B. ’27, Isabella F. ’27, Hannah S. ’27, Julia K. ’27, Oliver M. ’27, and Ryan N. ’27 had to work together to recreate a DaVinci painting, make a three-dimensional representation of one of his works, and recreate another DaVinci work in any form the team wished. They took fourth place with their solution.

Our team of both third and fourth-graders, Bradley L. ’27, Ari K. ’27, Chase M. ’27, Addison A. ’28, Vincenzo A. ’28, Peyton W. ’28, and Nathalie P. ’28, worked together to solve the first problem, OMER to the Rescue, Again. They had to design a vehicle that could be disassembled and transported in two suitcases. They came in twelfth place and it looks like they had a lot of fun with this challenging problem.

One of our third-grade teams took on the Opposites Distract problem where they had to create a humorous performance with a sneaky character. Lucy S. ’28, Harli H. ’28, Caroline W. ’28, Ryder L. ’28, Ari M. ’28, Joshua F. ’28, and Patrick D. ’28 all worked together and they finished in fifth place.

Our other third-grade team, Naya C. ’28, Sophia C. ’28, Elizabeth B. ’28, Riya K. ’28, Isabelle E. ’28, Carlie M. ’28, and Layla A. ’28, worked on the Hide in Plain Sight problem. This technical problem involves creating a creature that changes throughout the performance. They placed third and will now head to the 2019 Florida Odyssey of the Mind State Tournament on Saturday, April 6, 2019, at the University of Central Florida in Orlando.

Finally, our Primary Team of first and second-graders worked together to solve the Museum Makers problem. Danny N. '29, Liam T. ’29, Davis F. ’29, Noah S. ’29, Riya S. ’29, Noah A. ’30, and Ethan C. ’30 had to create and present an original museum and its exhibits. While students in this age group do not compete for scores, the team had fun creating their X-Ray Adventure museum and the feedback from the judges was great!

“I would like to thank all of the parents and staff who have volunteered to work with our Odyssey of the Mind teams this year. From creativity and confidence to teamwork and leadership, our kids are learning so much with this program and it is amazing to watch,” shared Lower School Director Nikki Ernst.
