Canterbury’s Science Symposium and Celebration an Incredible Success!

Canterbury School would like to recognize everyone who participated and made this year’s Science Symposium and Celebration a successful event! It took place on Saturday, December 7, 2019, inside Canterbury’s Murphy Sports Center.
Each year, Canterbury School students in grades 6-12 have the opportunity to participate in an independent science research program. Their research is presented in the form of a backboard during the school’s Science Symposium. Students in K-12 can also participate by doing a project for the Inventors Fair. Judges are invited from the community to evaluate the projects.

A limited number of projects in the Junior Division (grades 6-8), the Senior Division (grades 9-12), and the Inventors Fair are selected to compete in the 63rd Annual Thomas Alva Edison Regional Science and Inventors Fair on January 18, 2020.

Students are encouraged to start their research by consulting with members of the research team, made up of teachers and staff throughout the school. Students can use the knowledge and experience of these faculty members for ideas and guidance throughout the research process. The Science Symposium is both a competition and a time for students to showcase their research and inventions. Each year, students throughout the divisions come together to celebrate science research and the products of their hard work.

Thank you Chauncey Goss '84 for serving as our keynote speaker and giving the audience an update on water quality issues in Southwest Florida. This year, Florida Governor Ron Desantis appointed Goss to the South Florida Water Management District Governing Board. Goss' colleagues then elected him Chairman of the SFWMD Governing Board. He is also the founder and managing partner of Goss Practical Solutions, a firm that provides federal fiscal policy analysis and budget forecasting. Goss and his family have been an important part of our school community for many years. In addition to attending Canterbury in his younger years, all three of Goss' sons graduated from Canterbury. He is past Chair of the Board of Trustees for Canterbury, and he is currently a Trustee.

From the bottom of our hearts, we would like to thank the Canterbury community for everything that you do. We truly appreciate working in a school that supports and promotes research,” shared Canterbury Upper School Science Teacher Kelly Percivall.
