Canterbury’s LIFT Program Welcomes Kerry Kennedy

On Thursday, February 6, Canterbury welcomed Kerry Kennedy to campus as a special guest of our Leadership Institute for Tomorrow (LIFT) program. Kerry Kennedy is the president of Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights, an organization that works alongside local activists to ensure lasting positive change in governments and corporations.
Kennedy, the seventh of Ethel and Robert F. Kennedy’s eleven children, has devoted more than 40 years to the pursuit of equal justice, the promotion and protection of basic rights, and the preservation of the rule of law. You can read more about Kennedy’s work here.

Kennedy started her day at Canterbury meeting with students in Greg Asbed’s Human Rights in the 21st Century class. Kennedy shared several experiences in her life that lead her to the work she is doing now and she noted, “when you are the seventh of eleven children you appreciate human rights at a very early age.” The students discussed topics such as what it means to actually hold governments accountable and thinking through the human rights lens.

Following the classroom session, Kennedy enjoyed a special interview with a team of our Cougar Vision students. The students prepared a list of thoughtful questions asking about the work she does and hot topics such as freedom of the press. Click here to watch the full interview. Kennedy also engaged in a conversation following the interview with our Middle Students in the audience. She asked the students for more questions and even got the students moving near the end. Kennedy wrapped up her visit to Canterbury with a special LIFT presentation in Canterbury’s Performing Arts Center with our Upper School students. She actively involved the audience as she shared more about the work that she does for human rights issues around the world. You can watch the full presentation by clicking here.
