Canterbury Student Selected for Top 300 Broadcom MASTERS
Congratulations to Michaela F. ’24 for being named one of the Top 300 MASTERS in the 2020 Broadcom MASTERS®, a program of Society for Science & the Public.
Broadcom MASTERS consists of the top ten percent of the sixth, seventh, and eighth-grade projects entered in Society-affiliated fairs around the country. The Broadcom MASTERS seeks to inspire young scientists, engineers, and innovators to solve the grand challenges of the 21st Century and is the nation's premier Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) competition for middle school students.
Michaela tells us her project, “Nature’s Filter: The Effect of Stropharia rugosoannulata Mycelium on the Nitrate and Phosphate Levels in Contaminated Runoff”, is inspired by her love for the environment and the Southwest Florida waterways. She is thrilled to have won a Top 300 spot because it is a great platform for spreading awareness about her research. The mushrooms she worked with are underestimated in their filtering properties and environmental value. Michaela will continue her research on a similar topic so that she can lead the way in preventative measures to decrease the harmful effects of algae blooms in our waters.
All 300 recipients and their designated teacher will receive a deluxe package including a Broadcom MASTERS merchandise, a specialized Invention Journal from The Lemelson Foundation, and a one-year family digital subscription to Science News magazine.
On September 16, Michaela hopes she will be announced as one of the thirty students selected to compete as finalists by a nationally ranked panel of scientists, engineers, and educators. These thirty science all-stars will virtually compete in a STEM competition for more than $100,000 in awards and prizes.
