Canterbury’s Model United Nations Team Holds In-House Conference
While other students may have been at home on Friday, October 9, for Parent-Teacher Conferences, our Model United Nations team was on campus for the first in-house conference of the year! Our 18 delegates split into two committees and debated the reunification of Korea in 2025 and the World Health Organization. The club members would like to give special thanks to the club advisors, Dr. Young and Mr. Kean, for their hard work and dedication in making this event possible.
The first committee underwent a specialized general assembly as government officials of South Korea and discussed what reunification with North Korea would require in 2025. The Best Position Paper went to Mia A. ’22 for her writing and portrayal of Director of National Intelligence Service, Lee Byung-ho. Best Delegate was awarded to Lara K. ’23 for her work in the conference as Minister of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport, Yoo Il-ho. Daniel Z. ’22 won Outstanding Delegate for his role as Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn.
The second committee simulated a World Health Organization general assembly and was highly influenced by COVID-19. The primary focus of the debate was on vaccine development and distribution versus holistic treatment for a number of illnesses. China, represented by Ishaan A. ’23, was awarded the Best Position Award. India (Rocio C. ’22) won Best Delegate, the United Kingdom (Michaela F. ’24) won Outstanding Delegate, and Germany (Grady L. ’24) won Honorable Delegate. In this committee, the chairs were amazed by the delegates’ creativity and teamwork in the argument.
The club leaders and staff advisors are proud of the team’s overall growth. The delegates are becoming more confident, better spoken, and more collaborative in their position papers and floor arguments. Way to go, MUN! We are excited to see what hot topics are on the debate table next for this amazing team.
