A Needed Victory

In the midst of the pandemic, a quiet surprise came to Canterbury: our first official diving team. While the school had previously had individuals compete within the season, there had never been enough members to count it as a “team”. This year, James G. ’24 and Ibi R. ’24 became part of that change.
Traditionally with diving, the athletes must compete in six separate diving events during a diving meet to have their points qualify towards the team’s score. However, our District swimming competition raises the stakes, and divers must make ten out of eleven possible diving events correctly to provide points from their team. “With twenty points on the line and the ability to potentially raise his team from fifth to fourth, Jimmy went out and did just that,” said proud coaches Chris Lamon and Alexa Elkins.

Both Jimmy and Ibi are now record-holding divers in Canterbury’s history, and Jimmy became the Boys’ District Diving Champion. Coach Chris stated, “Very few times in sports does the feel-good story end well. Rocky lost the first fight against Apollo Creed, Rudy didn’t win a Heisman trophy. . . now Canterbury has such a story.” We are so happy to see Jimmy’s hard work be rewarded! Congratulations to both him and Ibi on their groundbreaking work as team divers for Canterbury.
