Kristy Kilfoyle, Director of Libraries, is Named to Newbery Award Committee
Kristy Kilfoyle will serve as a member of the 2022 John Newbery Award Committee.
The committee is charged with selecting annually the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. The Newbery Medal encourages original and creative work in the field of books for children, emphasizes to the public that contributions to the literature for children deserve similar recognition to poetry, plays, or novels, and gives to those librarians, who make it their life work to serve children’s reading interests, an opportunity to encourage good writing in this field. Mrs. Kilfoyle, Canterbury's Director of Libraries, teaches across all divisions, sharing her love of literature and research.
The Newbery Award Committee operates under the direction of the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association. The American Library Association serves as a voice of America’s libraries and the people who depend on them. ALA promotes the highest quality library and information services and protects public access to information. There are nearly 64,000 members worldwide. It is the oldest and largest library association in the world with members and academic, public, school, government, and special libraries. The Association for Library Service to Children is concerned with the evaluation of library materials for children; improving and expanding library services for children and those who work with them in all library settings; advocating the rights of children within and beyond libraries; supporting the professional development of members; supporting research and study in these areas.
