Opening Students’ Eyes

As the World Languages Department Chair, Dr. Mary Smith is dedicated to opening her students’ eyes and immersing them in a language’s culture. In April 2021, she led her AP Spanish students on a field trip to Immokalee to learn about the lives of migrant farmers.
The AP Spanish students visited the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, and they learned about the Coalition’s fight to provide basic human rights for their workers. Dr. Smith shared, “The tour and information session was entirely in Spanish. This gave our students a chance to work on fluently conversing with the employees, asking questions, and comprehension. We are so thankful that we were able to visit the Coalition of Immokalee Workers!”

Special thanks to Canterbury parents, Laura Germino and Greg Asbed, for helping to coordinate the visit.
