Track Finishes Together at State Competition

Canterbury’s Track and Field Team wrote the last chapter in their “Finish Together” story at the FHSAA 1A Championships in Jacksonville, Florida, on Friday, May 7, 2021. As a result of their teamwork and commitment, the team earned 11 medals!
Dominic C. ’21 finished out his career as a Cougar by becoming the state runner-up (Second Place) in the high jump with a 6’1 ½” jump. Dominic is also the first-ever Canterbury player who will be playing Division 1 collegiate Football! He will be attending Stetson University in the fall of 2021.

Future University of Florida Gator cross-country and track star, Jessica E. ’21, claimed a state champion title in the 800-meter dash to round out her impressive list of accomplishments as a Cougar. Jessica also led two relays to success at states. The 4 x 800-meter relay (consisting of Jessica E. ’21, Giana D. ’25, Gabby S. ’23, and Hayden B. ’23) earned an impressive third place and the bronze medal. The 4 x 400-meter relay (consisting of Jessica E. ’21, Michelle B. ’23. Giana D. ’25, and Ellie M. ’25) won a state title and first place. “It was an exhilarating, come-from-behind finish,” said Coach Kim West.

Giana D. ’25, an up-and-coming eighth-grade track star, also placed eighth in the state for her 800-meter dash, earning her a podium spot and a medal. Gabby S. ’23 finished tenth in the 3200-meter run and raced a new personal best time. Coach West praised, “All of the student-athletes competing were amazing, especially since the qualifying field and the schedule of events were significantly reduced due to Covid-19 restrictions. Just getting to the state meet was a huge accomplishment, and we are very proud of our student-athletes.”

All season long, Coach Booth has been using the extended metaphor of Our Story to rally team spirit and grit for his athletes. Coach Booth shared, “Beyond winning, what truly makes this story amazing was seeing this team make incredible sacrifices for each other. They focused on making long-lasting bonds and connections with each other. . . . We became more than just a team. We became a family, and every day we went out and wanted to add a better page to our story. This is why the story is so unforgettable. They learned it was more about the moments they created for each other rather than the just the results they produced. . . . I love this family and will always remember Our Story.”
