AP Seminar Explores Prehistoric Warm Mineral Springs

Canterbury's inaugural class of AP Seminar students headed up to the prehistoric Warm Mineral Springs in North Port on September 14, to wrap up their discussions around the theme of responsibility.
Students learned about the archaeological finds on the floor of the oxygen-free spring and floated in the comfortable 87 degree water containing 51 different minerals.

In addition to being a place of rest and restoration, this ancient sinkhole, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is one of the most important underwater archeological sites in North America and is rumored to be the real Fountain of Youth. Explorations by Eugenie Clark and William Cockrell in the 1970's unearthed early human tools and shark remains. More recent dives revealed the bones of saber-tooth tigers, giant sloths, ancient human skeletal remains that have been carbon-dated to dates ranging from 8,000 to 10,200 B.C.E.

AP Seminar is a new course at Canterbury this year and the first of two required courses to receive the AP Capstone Diploma.
