Coach Hibbs Secures Milestone Win 400

Head coach Mike Hibbs notched his 400th win on Tuesday evening in the Murphy Sports Center, defeating South Fort Myers High School 60-46.
It was a milestone night on the Canterbury campus as the varsity boys basketball team took the court in hopes of clinching Coach Hibbs' 400th win of his career.

Coach Hibbs began his head coaching career at The Bullis School, an independent prep school in Maryland, and made additional stops at Loyola Blakefield, Our Lady of Good Counsel, and Cumberland Valley before landing at Canterbury.

Hibbs enters his third season as head coach of the varsity boys basketball program at Canterbury and has transformed a program from the inside out.

"He has done an amazing job with our players and team since taking over," said athletic director Frank Turco. "What makes him so special, he's an even better English teacher and that is exhibited by the love and support our students show him at games and around campus."

It was only a matter of time before securing the milestone win, but the question was when.

It was a back-and-forth affair in the early going of Tuesday night's contest, with both teams matching each other's baskets. The Cougars took a ten-point lead heading into the final quarter, but South Fort Myers looked to be clawing their way back into the game. Missed free throws proved to be pivotal for the Wolfpack down the stretch as Canterbury would go on to take a commanding lead and solidify a fourteen-point win.

"My mentor, Coach Wootten, told me, when I got my first varsity head coaching position at Bullis, that I needed to make sure to surround myself with good people and good things would follow. He was right, and thankfully I have had so many good people with whom I have surrounded myself, mainly my assistant coaches, my players and their families," said Hobbs after being asked what this milestone means to him. "This is really a milestone for all of them. I never scored a point in any of those wins. I have been blessed to work with such great people, but even more blessed to have my parents who came to so many of my games when I first started out and a wife and kids who have supported and encouraged me throughout."
