Canterbury Dedicates Sublett Family Commons

In recognition of a generous donation as part of The Lucas Match, Canterbury School held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, February 3, to dedicate the Sublett Family Commons.
The Sublett Family Commons is named in honor of Donna and Jim Sublett, their daughter Susan Sublett Chicone '99, grandson Matt Sanner '03, and granddaughter Lucy Chicone '29.

“This space is the hub of activity for our Upper School,” shared Head of School Rick Kirschner. “It’s where our students spend quality time with their friends and a place where our community comes together as a family. And I cannot think of a better family to dedicate this space to than the Sublett Family.”

Associate Head of School George Pappas echoed those remarks, “We cannot thank the Sublett Family enough for all that you have done to support learning at Canterbury, now and for many years to come.”

The celebration culminated as current fifth-grader Lucy Chicone stood alongside her mother Susan and grandmother Donna, and officially cut the ribbon. During her remarks to the attending family, friends, and school leaders, Sublett shared that she and Jim picked the commons because they wanted a space on campus where students gathered to have fun. She then shared the wording written on the dedication plaque:

“Both Jim and Donna's lives were deeply impacted by education. Jim, who despite having limited educational opportunities growing up, became a successful businessman; and Donna, whose father's experience as a student-athlete taught her the importance of education resulting in her earning an advanced teaching degree from LSU and teaching at-risk elementary students. Both understood the value of a Canterbury education and that is why they have been involved with and supported the school for over 30 years.”

Canterbury School is beyond grateful for all the love and generosity the entire Sublett Family has given our great school.
