Students Inducted into World Language Honor Societies
On Tuesday, March 6, the World Languages Department gathered in the Ellenberg Library to induct students into the Chinese, French, and Spanish Honor Societies.
This is the first time in school history that the World Languages Department came together to highlight all language honor societies in one, collective ceremony. In total, more than 25 students were inducted into the prestigious honor societies.
Dr. Mary Smith opened the ceremony by welcoming students and parents. The National Chinese Honor Society was the first to induct its students, followed by the French Honor Society (La Société Honoraire de Français), and Spanish Honor Society (Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica).
Chinese Honor Society
To be inducted into the National Chinese Honor Society, students must complete four semesters of Chinese with a grade of B or above. Students also must want to continue to learn Chinese, understand the Chinese culture, and promote peace and prosperity in the world.
After participating in a candle lighting ceremony, Chinese teacher Ms. Yu He led this year's inductees in the Oath of Induction and awarded their cords and certificates. Congratulations to Kyla K. '22 and Zachary R. '23 on being inducted into this year's National Chinese Honor Society.
French Honor Society
To be considered for induction, initiates must have maintained an A- average in French for three semesters. Emilie C. '22 and Andres S. '23 led the ceremony with the guidance of Upper School French teacher Ms. Coverdale. Congratulations to this year's class of inductees: Bo H. '24, Olivia T. '25, Kai W. '24, Anthony C. '25, Tolga H. '25, Matthew K. '25, Anika K. '25, and Julian V. '23.
Spanish Honor Society
The Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica recognizes “high achievement in Spanish or Portuguese and promotes the continuity of interest in Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian studies.”
The second oldest honor society on campus, this year’s induction marks the 32nd class of new members! For induction, students must be a sophomore or higher and maintain an average of 90 percent for three consecutive semesters in advanced Spanish classes. They are also required to have a Spanish teacher’s endorsement.
