Athlete of the Week: May 9, 2022

In our final Athlete of the Week Spotlight, we would like to highlight the senior, baseball duo of Tanner L. '23 and Michael M. '23 for their efforts in the FHSAA Baseball Regional.
The third baseman and shortstop held down the left side of the infield all year long for the Cougars and played integral parts in helping Canterbury reach the regional semifinals against Out-of-Door Academy.

Michael, a Baylor University commit, was on fire at the plate in his final two games as a Cougar. Playing through injury, Michael stepped in as designated hitter, registering four hits in seven at-bats against Keswick Christian School in the regional quarterfinals. He was also an integral piece at the plate to keep Canterbury in the game against Out-of-Door Academy in the semifinals.

"It was awesome to see Michael find his swing again and be so productive at the plate at the right time," said head baseball coach Frank Turco. "We are so grateful for all he has given to the baseball program and are going to miss him immensely."

Tanner was the Cougar's steady rock all season long, being named the team MVP. The versatile two-way player stepped up big in the regional quarterfinals, shifting over to shortstop to cover for Michael. He also contributed at the plate, recording two hits and two runs scored. In the regional semifinals, he threw six and 2/3 innings.

"Tanner was our emotional leader this season," said Turco. "Our team rallied around him. We are going to miss him next year, but excited to see where he will be taking his talents to in the fall."
