Canterbury Upper School Theatre Production Named Top in County

Canterbury Upper School Thespians sit atop the local theatre world after winning Outstanding Overall Production for their musical Elf at the 2023 High School Musical Awards on Friday, May 4 at the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Center.
The High School Musical Awards, started in 2008, celebrates the local high school actors and actresses, orchestras, and musical productions for their outstanding work throughout the school year. Eight judges travel to each school’s production during the year and then come together to award top honors in the following categories: Outstanding Performance by an Orchestra, Outstanding Technical Achievement, Outstanding Actress, Outstanding Actor, and Outstanding Overall Production.

Canterbury became just the second private school since the award’s inception to run away with the highest honor, Outstanding Overall Production, defeating perennial powerhouse North Fort Myers. Also, Canterbury’s Julian V. ‘23 was named Outstanding Actor for his work as Buddy the Elf.

In addition to top overall awards, the committee also recognizes top performers within each school’s cast. Top performers named for Elf include: Cameron W. ‘23 (best tech), Macy M. ‘25 (best performer in a leading role), and Addison B. ‘25 (best ensemble performer).

This year’s High School Musical Awards featured eight of the top programs in Lee County, including: Bishop Verot High School, Bonita Springs High School, Cypress Lake High School, Ida Baker High School, Island Coast High School, Lehigh Senior High School, and North Fort Myers High School.
