Canterbury Students Win Top Awards at International Science Fair
Canterbury School is proud to share that two of our students earned top awards at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF).
The event took place May 13-19, 2018, in Pittsburgh. Intel ISEF is the world’s largest international pre-college science competition. Nearly 2,000 high schoolers from 81 countries, regions, and territories gathered for this year’s fair. Out of the five Intel ISEF finalists from our regional fair, the Thomas A. Edison Regional Science Fair, Canterbury had three students attend Intel ISEF: Anna K. ’18, Mark L. ’20, and Luke L. ’19.
Luke L. ’19 took home first place in the category of Microbiology, as well as a cash award of $3,000. His project was named “Green Watts: Investigating Power Generation of Spartina patens Compared to Chlorophytum comosum by Utilizing a Mixed Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 Community in a Plant Microbial Fuel Cell (A Novel Fourth Year Study).”
Upper School Science Teacher Michael Haughey shared, ”For the past four years, Luke has been working to create an efficient microbial fuel cell. Basically, these fuel cells are a battery that uses bacteria to generate electricity. Previously Luke optimized the bacterial community in his soil. This year he was looking to increase his power production and increase the sustainability of the cell. To increase the power production Luke introduced a new species of bacteria into the soil, and to make the system more sustainable he added various plants to provide nutrients for the bacteria. Pretty much covering his fuel cell into an all natural 100 percent organic solar panel. What he found was that his new plant-based microbial fuel cell was able to produce 360 percent more power than the previous year's cell. Imagine using a rooftop garden to power your house!”
Mark L. ’20 placed fourth in the category of Earth and Environmental Sciences and won a $500 cash award. His project was titled “Insights into the Effects of Tropical Disturbances Hurricane Irma and Invest 92L on the Dynamics of the Phytoplankton Community of the Estero Bay Estuary.”
