Planned Giving

The 1964 Society was officially renamed in 2019 for those individuals whose vision, commitment and support founded our school. Since that time, over 50 years ago, Canterbury has grown to become Southwest Florida’s premier independent prep school.

A Guide to Canterbury’s 1964 Society

Whether honoring a special teacher, a special moment during their Canterbury experience, or to culminate a life-long relationship with the school, each member of the 1964 Society has done so because they want to leave a legacy at a place that has made a meaningful difference in their life.  Should you have questions or would like to discuss further, please contact George Pappas, Associate Head for Advancement and Strategic Initiatives, (239) 481-4323 x718, email

Simplest Ways to Include Canterbury in Your Plans
The simplest way to make a gift is through your will. In fact, the majority of most planned gifts are made through a will. Should you decide to include Canterbury in your will, you can choose a specific sum, percentage, or the remainder of an estate.

The official language is:
I hereby give, devise and bequeath TO CANTERBURY SCHOOL INC. AKA THE CANTERBURY SCHOOL OF FORT MYERS, (Federal ID No. 59-1058089), a Florida not for profit corporation,  [written amount or percentage of the estate or description of the property], to be used for (gift restriction, if any) (or for its unrestricted use and purpose).

Another Easy Option to Include Canterbury in Your Plans
There are many other options, including making a gift through a beneficiary designation of your IRA or other retirement account, bank account, tax deferred annuities, brokerage account, or through life insurance.  Each organization, whether it is your retirement, brokerage, insurance company, or your bank has a specific forms that you can use to designate Canterbury as beneficiary of either a particular amount, or a percentage of your account.
