Canterbury School Named a Heart Smart School

Canterbury School proudly announces its designation as a Heart Smart school in Lee County. This important recognition is awarded to schools that demonstrate preparedness for cardiac emergencies by uploading a formal response plan and conducting drills that include using an automated external defibrillator (AED).
While several schools in Lee County have received this designation, Canterbury stands out for going above and beyond the basic requirements. All students in grades 5 through 12, as well as all faculty and staff, have been trained in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). That is nearly 600 students and more than 175 faculty and staff members equipped with lifesaving skills.

Canterbury’s commitment to CPR training was sparked by alumna Melina Manuelidis ’21. After witnessing a referee suffer a heart attack during a Varsity Girls Lacrosse game, she launched a CPR initiative on campus. The referee survived thanks to someone nearby who knew CPR, a powerful reminder of the importance of training.

Today, Canterbury continues to prioritize heart safety with seven AEDs located across campus, further supporting our preparedness to respond swiftly in the event of a cardiac emergency.
