Thirty Students Inducted Into World Languages Honor Societies
On Tuesday, April 18, the World Languages Department gathered in the Performing Arts Center to induct students into the ASL, Chinese, French, and Spanish Honor Societies.
For the second year, the World Languages Department came together to highlight all language honor societies in one, collective ceremony. The department was excited to induct its inaugural class into the American Sign Language (ASL) Honor Society. In total, 30 students were inducted into the four prestigious honor societies.
To be inducted into any world language honor society at Canterbury, inductees must be of junior or senior standing and: earn at least a 3.5 weighted GPA, complete at least two years of the language course, earn an A- or higher in each semester, record of leadership, service, and citizenship in school and the community, and receive approval from the Department of World Languages.

Dr. Mary Smith, World Languages Department Head, opened the ceremony by welcoming students and parents. The National Chinese Honor Society was the first to induct its students, followed by the French Honor Society (La Société Honoraire de Français), Spanish Honor Society (Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica), and ASL Honor Society.
Chinese Honor Society
After participating in a candle lighting ceremony, Chinese teacher Ms. Yu He led this year's inductees in the Oath of Induction and awarded their cords and certificates. Congratulations to Reese C. '24, Michaela F. '24, Alexa G. '24, James G. '24, and Ava S. '25 on being inducted into this year's National Chinese Honor Society.
French Honor Society
Jack P. '24 and Jasmine S. '23 led the ceremony with the guidance of Upper School French teacher Ms. Coverdale. Congratulations to this year's class of inductees: Ella C. '25, Ben C. '23, Lila K. '25, and Ava S. '25.
Spanish Honor Society
The Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica recognizes “high achievement in Spanish or Portuguese and promotes the continuity of interest in Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian studies.”
The second oldest honor society on campus, this year’s induction marks the 33rd class of new members!
